Stem cells are cells with the potential to develop (differentiate) into multiple types of cells.
- Totipotent stem cells can develop into “any” cell type.
- Pluripotent stem cells can develop into many, but not all, cell types.
- Multipotent stem cells can develop into several cell types within a specific cell family.
iPSCs (induced Pluripotent Stem Cells) are stem cells made from non-stem cells (typically skin cells) taken from a patient and treated with hormonal signals to get them to revert back to stemness so they can then be treated with cell-type-specific signals to get them to differentiate into desired cell types.
Synonyms:
stem cell, totipotent, pluripotent, multipotent
