Apparently in some labs it’s a tradition to make and decorate a hat to present newly-minted doctors with. These hats are not those weird puffy ones you wear at graduation. Instead, these are super awesome fun hats customized to the person and their research, and they’re presented to a grad student after they’ve successfully defended their thesis (more on that here: https://bit.ly/actualthesisdefense). One of the postdocs in our lab brought this tradition to us and I’m the second in the lab to have the honor of a custom-made cap (congrats again Dr. Katie Meze for defending in July!). This hat makes me feel so loved and appreciated. And I’m incredibly grateful. Although I plan to become an undergrad-focused professor, and therefore don’t know if PhD students are in my future, I think this tradition is awesome and should be more widespread!
