Something introduced into an individual comes from that same individual (auto = self). Ex: Bone marrow (containing blood-making cells) is removed from a patient, its cells are treated &/or genetically edited (such as to fix a mutation or add a gene) ex vivo (outside the body), and then they’re placed back in the patient. Contrasts with allogeneic transplants, where the cells, etc. come from a different individual. Compared to allogeneic transplants, there’s reduced risk of immune rejection because the cells are their own.
