Changes in DNA that have no known observable effect(s) at the level of the protein &/or organism. They may occur in protein-coding “exons” or regulatory regions such as introns, promoter regions, & intergenic (between-gene regions). Classification is based on observed (lack of) effect. Silent mutations can occur anywhere in the genome. Silent mutations in exons are in the form of synonymous mutations.
